TRACE TUTORIAL
This wiki will walk you through the process of setting up room templates within TRANE Trace. Setting up custom room templates in accordance with ASHRAE will provide a much more accurate energy model than Revit 2010.

ROOM CATEGORIZATION

  • Export Revit room schedule to excel
  • Group rooms according to occupancy classifications: Ashare 62.1-2007 Table 6-1 (Pg. 15-17)
    • Examples: Break Room, Classroom, Cold Storage, Computer Lab, Conference, Corridor, Creamery, Electrical Large, Electrical Small, Elevators, Laboratory, Main Entry Lobbies, Mechanical, Office, Reception, Restroom, Shipping/Receiving, Storage

EXPORT & IMPORT gbXML
  • Revit
    • R
    • Export
    • gbXML
  • Trace
    • File
    • Import gbXML...
    • Do Not include people, lighting loads, venitaltion, temperatures, partitions (it is recommended to manipulate the room loads via the “Create Templates”)

TEMPLATE TABS
  • Internal Load = # People in Space
    • People
      • Type: If desired type is there use it, If not select None
      • Density: Ashare 62.1-2007: Table 6-1 (Pg. 15-17): Occupant Density Invert [# / 1000sqft] to get [sqft / person]
      • Schedule: cooling only (design)
    • Lighting
      • Type: Recessed Fluorescent, not vented, 80% load to space (worst case scenario)
      • Heat gain: Ashrae 90.1-2007: Table 9.6.1 (Pg. 64-66) Lighting Densities [watts/square ft] (for specific occupancy classification)
    • Miscellaneous
      • Type: Use defaults for None, Std Office, Std School (Classroom), or set...
        • Large Electrical: 20 W/SF
        • Large Mechanical: 10 W/SF
        • Small Electrical: 2 W/SF
        • Elevators: 10 W/SF
        • Labs / Serving Areas: 1-2 W/SF
  • Airflow
    • Ventilation: Yes
      • Peop-based: Ashare 62.1-2007: Table 6-1 (Pg. 15-17): People [cfm/person]
      • Area-based: Ashare 62.1-2007: Table 6-1 (Pg. 15-17): Area [cfm/SF]
    • Std. 62.1 Ez
      • Clg Ez: ceil - ceil
      • Htg Ez: flr - flr
  • Thermostat
    • Do not adjust
    • Record default settings for final report
    • Food Processing ONLY: adjust setpoint temp. requirements & humidity ratio
  • Construction = Thermodynamic Properties
    • Construction (Must look up from drawings) (Following is for Food Science Building)
      • Slab: 6” HW Conc
      • Roof: 4” LW Conc
      • Wall: Face Brick, 6” LW Conc, 3” Ins
      • Partition: 8” HW Conc Block
    • Ashrae 90.1-2007: minimum heat transfer coefficients for the specific climate zones in US
  • Room
    • Automatically created from the templates developed in the internal load, airflow, thermostat, & construction tabs

CREATE ROOM CHECKS
  • Roof
    • delete rooms that do not exsit (i.e. roofs on 1st floors)

USING ASHRAE 62.1
  • Specific space / zone type
  • CFM/sqft
  • occupant density
  • CFM/occupant

#OCCUPANTS EXAMPLE
  • 1200 sqft lecture room
  • Zone = adult classroom, or classroom ages 9+
  • Occupant Density = 30 people/1000 sqft
  • CFM/person = 7.5 cfm/occupant
  • Area ventilation = 0.12 cfm/sqft
  • OCCUPANT DENSITY
    • Occupants = 1200SF* 30ppl/1000SF = 360 people in classroom
    • Ventilation [cfm of outdoor air] = (1200SF*0.12 cfm/sf)+(1200SF*300ppl/1000SF)*7.5CFM/SF) = 414 CFM
